Supporting Partners
The Community Connection is a collaboration between
OSUs Service Learning Initiative, Project Community, and P-12 Project.
Service Learning Initiative
The Service-Learning Initiative (SLI) at The Ohio
State University leads efforts to integrate service-learning across the
curricula of the seventeen colleges of the university while improving
the success of P-12 education, community-based organizations and service
agencies in meeting the needs of university district residents. With funding
from the Corporation for National Service, thirty mini-grants will be
awarded to Ohio State University faculty over the next three years for
the development of courses incorporating community-based teaching, learning
and inquiry and service in cooperation with community partners.
Project Community
Project Community is a clearinghouse for volunteer
resources, referrals, and programs. Project Community staff help connect
students with direct service opportunities, provides outreach to student
organizations, works with agencies to build sustainable relationships,
and plans several large-scale projects like Community Commitment, MLK
Day of Service, Make a Difference Day, and Alternative Spring Break.
Students at The Ohio State University have a strong
history of being committed to service to the community. Over the past
decade, university staff members have seen an increase in the amount of
student involvement in the University District. We also know that students
are entering the university community from high schools with experience
in community service. To that end, this database has been designed to
continue student involvement in service opportunities.
P-12 Project
The mission of the P-12 Project is to assist in
the improvement of Ohios schools, particularly in districts that
serve children and youths from lower socio-economic families. The P-12
Project aims to catalyze, initiate, promote, and support collaboration
between the OSU and Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade schools.
As recipients of a large percentage of the students
who volunteer, the schools in close proximity to The Ohio State University
have a particularly keen interest in increasing the number of predictable
and sustainable student volunteers in the schools. To support these schools,
the P-12 Project works with Columbus Public Schools, various campus student
groups, and other campus and community organizations to recruit and support
tutoring and mentoring in the local schools.
